Massachusetts Firearms Licensing Portal (MIRCS)

Massachusetts now uses an online system for applying for or renewing a License to Carry (LTC) or Firearms Identification Card (FID).

Planning to apply? Your first step is completing a certified firearms safety course.

Start your application here:

Massachusetts Firearms Licensing Portal (MIRCS)

This system is used for both new applications and renewals, including non-resident LTC applications.

What to Expect

Creating an account takes only a few minutes. During registration, you will receive:

  • An email with a temporary password
  • A second email with a validation code

Tip: Wait until both emails arrive before completing setup. Because the credentials can be complex, using a desktop or laptop is often easier than a mobile device.

After You Apply Online

Once your application is submitted:

  • Your application is recorded in the state system
  • You will be contacted by your local police department to schedule an in-person appointment
  • Fingerprinting and a photograph will be completed at the appointment
  • The application fee ($100) is paid at that time, unless available by your town to pay online

Applicants will often see their status listed as "Pending" shortly after submission.

Important: You do not need to wait to apply, but completing your safety course first allows you to move forward without delays once your certificate is issued.

Processing Timeline

Under Massachusetts law, licensing authorities are expected to process applications within statutory timeframes. In practice, processing times may vary depending on the department and application volume.

Submitting your application through the MIRCS portal establishes your application in the system and begins the review process.

Important Notes

  • The online submission is now the standard method for applying
  • Local police departments complete final processing steps
  • This system applies to both residents and non-residents
